BEST & WORST AT THE GOLDEN GLOBES 2018 The 2018 awards season started Sunday with the Golden Globes and it will end in a few months with the Oscars. As I’m sure you know, this year everyone agreed to dress in black for solidarity with the “Me Too” and the new “Time’s Up” movements, both very worthy causes. Everyone one wore black – women, men, even all the TV reporters. Everyone, that is, except for this one thirsty actress: Obviously Blanca Blanco, a basically unknown actress, used the event to draw attention to herself. It’s not the first time she has caused a stir on the red carpet. Once, her dress was so revealing, everyone got long looks at her privates. I say long, because it wasn’t a mistake or just a slip, it was intentional. I’m not surprised Blanco would be the one to not wear black. There were two others who also didn’t wear black – but both were not Americans. Even though the event was Black Only, there were still some beautiful looks. I had thought it was going to be a boring night for fashion, but instead, it was exciting to see how these stars took a strict fashion code and made it their own. There were a few trends that really stuck out: “Is it Pants or Is it a Dress?” was seen a few times. Alison Brie in Vassilis Zoulias was one who wore the trendy pants/dress combo – and Brie’s was one of the prettiest. But all I could think of was this disaster: Demi Moore in 1989 wore this outfit to the Oscars. It remains as one of the “Worst” dresses ever worn to the Oscars. Demi started the “Is it Pants or Is it a Dress?” look – it just took almost 30 years for the trend to take off. But don’t feel sorry for Demi. In 2010 she completely vindicated herself when she wore this Versace to the Oscars. Gorgeous. Such a beautiful dress!! And only Demi would look younger and prettier 20 years later!! Besides the “Is it Pants or Is it a Dress?” trend, “Different Sleeves” was another trend. Saoirse Ronan in a Different Sleeves dress by Versace. Her right shoulder looked like a sock wrapped in aluminum foil. This is on my Worst Dressed Look. I’m afraid Saoirse needs a new stylist. STAT. I do love her bracelet though! Kelly Clarkson had the same Different Sleeves weirdness going on. I hate to be so negative, but on High-Definition TV, her dress looked very cheap though I’m sure someone paid a fortune for it. Designed by Christian Siriano, the young reality star, this wasn’t his only worst dressed look of the night. Debra Messing wore the “Is it Pants or Is it a Dress” trend, also by Christian Siriano. Her dress/pants looked cheaply constructed just as Kelly’s did. I’m sorry, but this is just beyond awful. I could have designed a better looking pants/dress combo than this! The area around her lower stomach/crotch area is so unflattering. Sadly, Siriano wasn’t through with his magic for the night. America Ferrera is also in Christian Siriano. She’s pregnant but that’s not why the coat has such strange lines – that’s Siriano’s fault. And it looks like he used the same material from Messing’s dress as for America’s. He still wasn’t through for the night. You would think he was Giorgio Armani judging by the number of woman who chose to wear Christian Siriano last night. And here we have Christina Hendricks in yet another Christian Siriano frock, this one features two trends of the night – the different sleeves look and the “Is it Pants or Is it a Dress” look. Siriano is playing in the big leagues but I’m not sure he is deserving or up to it. It will be interesting to see if he does any Oscar dresses. Moving on from Christian Siriano. One way that designers individualized the Black Only rule was to add another color, usually white. Alexis Bledel looked beautiful in Oscar de la Renta. I loved her belt/sash with sequins – belts were another trend last night. Winner! Allison Janney wore Mario Dice and she looked the prettiest I’ve ever seen her! Her butterfly dress was wonderful. Beautiful couple alert: Armie Hammer and Elizabeth Chambers. I like how she brightened up her black velvet dress with a blue silk sash. Samira Wiley would have been on the Best Dressed list if that orange thing wasn’t attached to it. It looked like a necklace was just pasted onto her chest. What a shame, because her hair and makeup were perfect and the lines on the dress by Romona Keveza looked great on her. One of my Best Dressed is Penelope Cruz. She was gorgeous in Ralph and Russo. Stunning perfection! It was Kendall Jenner’s first time at the Golden Globes and she made quite an appearance! In Giambattista Valli – her dress was a bit extravagant for the Golden Globes and would probably be better suited for the Oscars, but wow!!! I love Kendall, she is such a sweet girl. I love her shoes too. Just beautiful! Now for the opposite side of the coin! I really liked this more dressed down look for Elisabeth Moss by Oscar de la Renta. The simple Peter Pan collar was her only jewelry. She doesn’t have a model’s figure and this dress was perfect for her. It has to be so hard in Hollywood to be an average weight instead of weighing just 98 pounds. I thought Elisabeth looked adorable in this dress. Margot Robbie wore Gucci. The dress doesn’t look as pretty in photographs as it did on High Definition TV. I gasped when she walked up – her dress looked stunning. She has such an incredible smile – her entire face lights up! Mary J Blige wore the different sleeves trend but she did it right – dress by Alberta Ferretti. Her dress is so beautiful and she looked wonderful – the prettiest that I can remember. Catherine Zeta Jones looks more like Scarlett O’Hara every day. She was a knockout in her Hollywood glamour dress by Zuhair Murad. She’s a stunner. Her appearance with her father-in-law Kirk Douglas was the most moving part of the night. Another trend was jeweled belts and Dakota Johnson wore one by Gucci. From the front her dress was simple – but from the back, it was wow. I do think it would have looked better without the straps. Zuri Hall wore a dress with circles – which is a trendy interior design element for 2018. I thought she looked beautiful!! This one is very hard for me. Sob!!! My favorite, Outlander star Caitriona Balfe wore Chanel. I didn’t like the dress – I hated the arm bands. I hated everything about the dress. She needs a new stylist. There, I said it. Caitriona is a gorgeous woman and she tends to wear mostly fashion-forward dresses but her choices always just miss. I blame that on her stylist. Here are my Best Dressed of the Golden Globe winners: Sarah Jessica Parker wore a 50s Princess styled dress by Dolce and Gabbana. With the trendy jeweled belt, she looked adorable. I loved the styling! Her hair was perfect. The shoes were pretty. Loved her look. Diane Kruger in Prada. Fabulous. The only issue was someone tripped over her train as she was making her way up to the microphone!! Her sheer cape with silver trim was so pretty as was the way the fabric was gathered on the bodice. Kate Hudson was in Valentino and I think she was my all time favorite. Her hair, the plunging neckline with the perfect necklace – she was the chic standout of the night. Her stylist is another one that always gets it right – Sophia Lopez. Kate never misses on the Red Carpet. My worst of the night? I hated the dress that Angelina Jolie wore! Those huge feather sleeves – how did she eat dinner???? She looked like a goth cheerleader with black pom-poms. Just terrible. Terrible. She needed some face powder too. Her dress made me miss this look – where Angelina walked the red carpet pushing out her right leg the entire time. The oddest look of the night? Jamie Chung wins the “huh?” award for wearing two different shoes!! Really? It’s a shame too because her dress was very pretty. What can I say? This is just ridiculous. Unfortunately it wasn’t mistake. This IS a pair of shoes – by Sophia Webster. And Jamie was getting praise for this mismatched pair. Seriously….. The BEST of the night? Oprah Winfrey! She looked gorgeous – age has treated this woman well – she is prettier now than when she was younger. Loved her glasses and earrings and dress!! But it was her speech that slayed me. All I could think of was Oprah in 2020!!! I have her running mate in mind too – but I can’t tell you, I try to keep politics out of the blog. LOL. OMG – if Oprah ran for President, she would get so many votes she would break the electoral college. Run Oprah Run!!!!!! Who cares about Hollywood when you have this real life Princess???? Monday was Princess Charlotte’s first day at preschool and she looked so adorable!!! Charlotte was all bundled up in her maroon coat and Mary Janes with gray tights – we couldn’t see her uniform. Maybe another day? The actual coat Charlotte wore isn’t available in the states, but I found this cute one at J Crew – it comes in different colors too. I plan on getting to those this weekend! The other day I got an email from a reader about hanging natural roman shades with curtains. This was her dilemma. Her window treatments were already up and she wanted to add the shades with an outside mount[outside the moulding of the window] up high under the rod. Like this….. This is Joni’s family room from Cote de Texas. I wonder if she knows that this image is on a window treatment site? Or this…. Southern Living She was not able to do it because there was no room under her rods. It takes a little planning to for this to happen…..the most important being the bracket length. I am obsessed with before and after pictures where small, dated and unattractive beach condominiums are turned into chic, beautiful vacation spots. For years Ben and I rented the ugliest condos at the beach and the entire time we were there I would think of what I would do to update it if we owned it. I would try to make our rentals more attractive for our stay – I would pack loose slipcovers and bright, trendy pillows. As soon as we arrived – I would go around the condo and put all the accessories and tacky wall hangings in a back closet. A few years ago, I wrote a story about my feeble attempts at making a rental unit look more homey. HERE. This is the reason why when I spotted a blog story about a vacation condo makeover I was completely obsessed! The condo was similar in size and style to what Ben and I rent at the beach – but, the After photographs were incredible. I loved what the designer did and when I looked at her portfolio, I found that I loved her aesthetic. I was in awe of her abilities to completely update her condo – and to be honest, I was a little jealous too! I saw her choices and knew I would probably have never thought to do what she had done. At the time I asked her if I could feature her condo and we decided to wait until her new web site went online, etc, etc. Cut to some time later – and here we finally are! A new website to go along with this story about Jennifer Schoenberger of Jennifer Schoenberger Design. Jennifer lives outside of Atlanta, Georgia and she writes the charming blog – Vreeland Road HERE. Today, I am so excited to show her condo along with some of her own home! Enjoy! BEACH HOUSE First, let’s look at the beach condo in Florida that caught my attention a few years ago. At first, Jennifer kept the identity of the client a secret, but later, she admitted that she and her husband actually owned it themselves. It is a small, one bedroom unit, with bunk beds that provide additional sleeping arrangements. The unit came with an ocean view – and was a great price – which made it all the more attractive. The problem of one bedroom was solved with the bunk beds, and so Jennifer embarked on the total redo. She made two design decisions that became the focal point of the unit and really turned the ugly into chic. First, on the floors she laid Peacock Pavers stone flooring – it’s a creamy tile that is beach friendly and beautiful. Next, she put rough hewn cedar planks on the ceiling, replacing the popcorn that was previously there. The ceilings are stunning. They look like driftwood and are a perfect choice for the beach – plus they add so much atmosphere and décor. They are just fabulous. BEFORE: When you enter the unit, you go down a long hall – the bunks are on the left, past the hanging jackets. At the end of the hall is the living room/kitchen. Notice
the dingy, once-was-white carpet past the tiled foyer and the popcorn ceiling. Now, look at this same space today: Wow. The star lanterns make a huge statement – available HERE. Notice the pavers – how they flow from the hall to the living area. At the left are the bunk beds – hiding behind a linen curtain (from Ikea!) unlined and breezy. She repainted the black mirror on the right to look more beachy. And – notice the planked ceiling! What a huge difference!!! I love the row of lanterns and the shadows they make are so lively in this enclosed space – another great choice Jennifer made. Here is the living/dining area. The other side of the room. And a before picture of the kitchen, which was completely gutted. This is the view looking down the hall to the front door – the bunks are on the right. And after: Jennifer used a white slipcover sofa along one wall with a skirted table and two taller slipped chairs along the other side wall. The Kubu basket doubles as a coffee table and adds a beachy vibe. After splurging on the basics – the tiled floor and cedar ceiling, she was thrifty with the décor, though it doesn’t show. The sofa, hide rug, baskets and curtains all came from Ikea!! Doesn’t it look wonderful? The two chairs are from Lee Industries while the burlap skirted table is from Ballard Designs. The custom pillows in a cheetah print and velvet add just a touch of luxe. Another view – this shows the antique piece that divides the living room from the hall. It’s a wonderful piece. And like I always say – one antique piece of furniture in a room is so important to the décor. The shelf adds so much and it makes all the other furniture look that much nicer – it is a stunner. The chippy shelf has just enough paint left on it – it looks like a piece of driftwood. The shelf is very functional and holds the Ikea glasses and plates. An earlier view – with different styling. I love the wood stick next to it and the shell prints. This picture gives you a nice view of the planked ceilings. Aren’t the Ikea curtains perfect?? And here’s a look at the kitchen. The footprint remained basically the same – but it was completely gutted. The wall that separated the two areas was removed – instead there is an island that allows traffic to move easier. And the island is much more open than the bar wall that was there before. Upper cabinets were removed and the refrigerator was given a built in look. The subway tile was continued up the wall for a more finished look. Something to remember: run backsplashes up as high as you can. Again – it really is a great look. A look at the more recent styling job. Jennifer added fish prints to break up the expanse of white. And here- you can see how she enclosed the refrigerator in the cabinetry, giving it the look of a built in. I did this in my kitchen too – it’s much cheaper than buying a Sub-Zero! Before: the bedroom had a wall of sliding glass doors. And after – Jennifer installed a rolling barn door with a z-motif. This opens up the closet – makes it much easier to get inside it. She painted on a headboard and installed a shelf, instead of a nightstand. Along the window are floor to ceiling linen curtains. Before: The bathroom was also gutted – she added a shower door and new sink. The bathroom today – Jennifer painted it dark to make it more dramatic and added molding strips along the walls. a simple vanity sink was added, along with a new pendant light and hanging shelves. And, on the door – she added molding strips – in an X shape. Here is a look at the bunk beds, before. And today – behind the Ikea linen curtains, she added a light at each bunk and West Elm sheets, along with a new paint job. This before and after says it all. The laundry room door, at the end of the hall, was truly nothing to look at. But with paint and the x molding on the door, along with a strip of molding with hooks on it – and a large wicker basket, the space is styled for a magazine. The X on all the doors was created by using 1 x 2 trim molding. It is all these touches – like the x motif, the wood planked ceiling, the redesigned kitchen, the barn door on the closet – that really shows Jennifer’s abilities. Jennifer’s House After living in their house for 10 years, Jennifer and her husband are moving to a new place! Renovating and styling a new house will provide lots of material for her blog (lucky!!) and I can’t wait to see what she does with her new home. She sent me some pictures of the house they are selling – and again, these pictures show off her great style. In the family room, the curtains and trim are by Mary McDonald’s fabric line for F. Schumacher. Love!!! Also, the pillow is another McDonald fabric. Against the large window, light blue pillows against the deep apricot of the fabric. The couch sits under a mass of mirrors with a sunburst mirror layered over them. Another great idea for filling up a large expanse of wall. An example of Jennifer’s styling. She painted the shelves dark which shows off her accessories much better than plain white walls. The dining room is a study in gray. An oversized fixture is the focal point. Jennifer and I share a love of symmetry. I feel better when a design is symmetrically balanced. Flanking the front window is a pair of French vintage chairs. I love this touch of fun! And flanking the door that leads to the kitchen are a pair of skirted rectangular tables. Jennifer’s kitchen is stunning. Again – a study in symmetry. I love the way the windows flank the stove hood and the appliances are on either side of them. The pendants are perfectly placed in front of each picture. The kitchen opens to the family room through an enlarged arch. And, at the end of the island is Jennifer’s favorite X motif! Love it!! Jennifer had beadboard installed in small hallways to add interest. The Keeping Room has a large banquette that sits in front of the window. A wall of sheer curtains is on the left. In front of the banquette is two chairs that sit by the fireplace. And, a night view of the keeping room – looking towards the back French door. Jennifer recently updated the mud room, making it a bit more contemporary with new sconces and a hanging shelf. Jennifer’s office – I love the two stools instead of chairs. And the crystal chandelier is a good juxtaposition to all the rough luxe. In Jennifer’s bedroom – she added a canopy by attaching hardware to the ceiling. This is a simple way to get a canopy bed and such a great idea. And the sitting area in her bedroom with symmetrical wall hangings. Finally, her bathroom with a set of Ikea framed prints and a linen curtain. Love the light over the mirror. This photograph is from Jennifer’s portfolio.
